Common Cosmetic Surgical Periodontal Procedures

Sometimes PerioImplant Associates recommends a surgical procedure to treat your periodontal disease and any damage it may have caused. Because our team has received specialized periodontics training following dental school, we are experts in performing multiple varieties of gum surgery and are trained in administering the appropriate measures such as sedation or anesthesia to ensure your comfort during your treatment.

  • Gum Graft Surgery- The exposure of tooth roots is the result of gum recession. Gum graft surgery will again cover the exposed root and also help prevent additional recession and any bone loss. During your gum graft surgery, PerioImplant Associates takes gum tissue from your palate or another donor source to cover the exposed root. Gum graft surgery can be performed on one tooth or a number of teeth and will help reduce tooth sensitivity and improve the aesthetics of your smile.
  • Regenerative Procedures- We may recommend a bone regeneration procedure when the bone supporting your teeth has been destroyed due to periodontal disease. These procedures can reverse some of the damage by encouraging the regeneration of lost bone and tissue. During this procedure, PerioImplant Associates folds back the gum tissue and removes the bacteria that is the source of the disease. We can use filtered membranes, bone grafts or tissue-stimulating proteins to encourage your body’s natural ability to regenerate bone and tissue.
  • Dental Crown Lengthening- You may have a gummy smile because your teeth appear short when you smile. In fact, your teeth may actually all be the proper length, but they are covered with excessive gum tissue. The proportions of teeth to gum are out of balance. To correct this, our team performs a dental crown lengthening procedure. During your dental crown lengthening procedure, excess gum and bone tissue is removed or reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth. This may be done to one tooth, to even your gum line, or to several teeth to expose a natural, healthy smile. PerioImplant Associates might also recommend dental crown lengthening to make a restorative or cosmetic dental procedure possible. Crown lengthening can adjust the gum and bone level to expose more of the tooth so it can then receive the restoration.
  • Periodontal Pocket Procedures- Your bone and gum tissue should fit snugly around your teeth. When you suffer from periodontal disease, this supporting tissue and bone is destroyed, creating pockets around your teeth. If not treated, these pockets become deeper, providing a larger space for damaging bacteria to accumulate and advance under the gum tissue. These pockets can result in bone and tissue loss. If too much bone is lost the teeth will need to be extracted. During a periodontal pocket procedure, PerioImplant Associates folds back the gum tissue and removes the infection before securing the tissue back into place. If there are irregular surfaces of the damaged bone, they are smoothed to limit the areas where disease-causing bacteria can hide. This allows the gum tissue to reattach to healthy bone.

Cosmetic Periodontics

If you are concerned with excessive gingival display, gingival or gum recession, or trouble with the interdental papilla or the tissue between your teeth, you might be a candidate for a life changing cosmetic periodontal procedure. They are sometimes surgical procedures because they may include either anesthesia for you or the use of sutures in order to address a gummy smile or a recessed gum line. The treatments not only help to improve your smile but can also be beneficial in protecting sensitive areas and preventing further complications.

There are three primary types of cosmetic periodontal surgery: cosmetic crown lengthening, cosmetic ridge augmentation, and connective tissue grafting. Different issues related to gums are addressed by each of these specific methods to make you more satisfied with your smile and appearance.

Cosmetic Periodontics Treatment Costs

The cost of your cosmetic periodontal treatments will depend on your individual needs and your treatment plan. We will talk through with you the cost of your treatment, insurance coverage, and available payment options before we begin, so that you can feel comfortable making the best choice for your situation.
