Bone Regeneration

Bone regeneration can be performed to protect your existing natural teeth and the soft tissues that are crucial in keeping them in place so you can continue to experience an improved quality of life as a direct result of increased overall health, function, and appearance.

The treatment can also benefit you if you have missing teeth or if you do not qualify for dental implants. Dental implants require a significant amount of jawbone mass prior to the procedure to be successful. Bone regeneration can help you if you suffer from a deteriorated or atrophied jawbone to support your restorations or prepare for a dental implant procedure.

In prior years, surgical tooth extractions were performed without performing a bone graft to preserve the shape and size of the jawbone tissue, which will shrink when not stimulated by a tooth’s natural root. Unfortunately, when your jawbone shrinks, a dental implant cannot be placed until the jawbone tissue is surgically rebuilt.

Now procedures have improved. It is now possible for PerioImplant Associates to perform tooth removal surgery while simultaneously protecting your jawbone tissue from shrinking, as well as regenerating jawbone tissue loss from previous tooth extractions through a procedure known as bone regeneration.

The Benefits of Bone Regeneration

The bone and gum tissue should fit together around each tooth. But when suffering from periodontal disease, this supporting tissue and bone is destroyed, and pockets develop around the teeth. Eventually, if too much bone is lost, the tooth will need to be extracted.

Bone regeneration helps your body to regenerate lost bone. By repairing the damage done by gum disease, this procedure will improve your chances of keeping your natural teeth and will also decrease the probability of serious health problems associated with the periodontal disease.

The Bone Regeneration Procedure

The process of simultaneously extracting a tooth and performing a bone grafting procedure is called ridge preservation. This procedure will prevent jawbone atrophy from ever taking place. First, the extraction of the damaged tooth must be performed in a conservative fashion, to promote faster healing. To ensure this, PerioImplant Associates usually uses microsurgery techniques when removing the affected tooth.

The empty tooth socket is then immediately grafted with a mixture of bone grafting materials. Once placed the surgical site is then covered with a collagen barrier. This collagen barrier contains the graft and separates it from the adjacent gum tissue. This barrier also prevents downgrowth of the gum into the underlying bone as it heals.

In some situations, additional bone graft or tissue-stimulating proteins are placed under the membrane to encourage your body’s natural ability to regenerate bone and tissue. Membranes around teeth are usually designed to dissolve away or reabsorb after a few short weeks.

There are a number of options that can enhance support for your teeth and restore your bone to a healthy level. During your personal treatment plan appointment, PerioImplant Associates will review all the options with you that will help you regain and maintain your periodontal health.

The cost of your bone regeneration procedure will depend on your individual needs and your specific treatment plan. We will review with you the cost of your treatment, insurance coverage, and available payment options before we begin, so that you can make the best choice for your situation.

Bone Regeneration Procedure Aftercare

The socket bone regeneration preservation usually takes between 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. Because PerioImplant Associates uses microsurgery techniques on our bone regeneration patients, there is usually extraordinarily little to no discomfort or swelling. Most of our patients report that the most inconvenient side effects from the surgery are not being able to chew on the surgical site for around two to three weeks after the procedure and the need to wait about four months after the bone regeneration procedure for dental implants to be placed.
