Bar Retained Overdenture in Louisville, KY & New Albany, IN

Bar-retained dentures are a version of implant-supported dentures called "overdentures". They are far more stable and secure than traditional dentures which can slip, move, and irritate your gums. You will find everyday tasks easier, and you will find speaking better. You do not have to be concerned that your denture may fall out or become loose. You will find that you will be able to eat foods you have not been able to enjoy in years.

Benefits Of Bar-Retained Overdentures

A noticeable advantage to having dental implants supporting the upper denture is that PerioImplant Associates can make your denture less bulky. A traditional denture needs to cover your entire palate whereas a bar retained overdenture does not necessarily need that extra material for support.

  • Stable Performance: One of the primary benefits of bar retained overdentures is that they are incredibly stable. Whether you are biting, chewing, speaking, singing, or doing about anything, they will remain firmly in place. In comparison to standard implant locking dentures, the bar retained overdenture tend to offer a better hold and distributes pressure more evenly throughout your mouth. This makes them more comfortable and dependable.
  • Easy Maintenance: Cleaning is extremely easy to do, making it simple to maintain their condition over an extended period. There are two steps to cleaning the bar-retained overdenture. The first step is to brush the bar just like you would your teeth. It is important to brush around the bar to remove any food debris that can become trapped in your mouth. After that, you brush your dentures and then submerge them in a cleaning solution.
  • Longevity: Excellent quality dentures are designed to last for years, but eventually they will need to be replaced. The benefit of the bar-retained system is that the bar implant itself will last for a long time and even when the overdentures fail, it is easy to replace them and then continue using the original bar system
  • Easy to Replace: A big benefit of a bar-retained overdenture is that you can easily replace the dentures themselves while keeping the bar system. It allows a new replacement denture to clip right into place. That means that even when something happens to your dentures, it is possible to order a replacement quickly and affordably. Even regular denture wear is not much of an issue due to the ease of replacement.

The Bar Retained Overdenture Procedure

The first step in the procedure is for your general dentist to take an impression, which PerioImplant Associates will then use to create a set of temporary dentures for you. After the temporary dentures are finished, diagnostic images are taken of the arch to specifically determine the exact placement of your dental implants.

After the administration of a local anesthetic, your titanium dental implants are surgically placed into your jawbone. Special healing caps are placed on the implant posts while you heal. At return visits PerioImplant Associates will monitor your healing process, identifying when the implants are ready for the next phase of treatment. You will continue wearing your temporary denture during this period.

After your implants have fully fused to the jawbone, we will take new impressions of arch. These impressions will be used to create both your support bar and the final overdenture.

During any follow up appointments, your general dentist will check for proper fit and bite alignment of the final denture. It could require several incremental fittings to ensure the best result. After all final adjustments have been made, the support bar is permanently fixed in place, and the overdenture is placed onto the bar.

With the restoration now completed, you have a removable solution custom designed to replace your natural teeth that can improve your facial appearance and your healthy smile, with the added advantage of clipping to a fixed bar that limits unwanted denture movement and promotes natural eating and speaking.

Bar Retained Overdentures Treatment Costs

The cost of your bar retained overdentures will depend on your individual needs and your treatment plan. We will discuss with you the cost of your treatment, insurance coverage, and available payment options before we begin, so that you can make the best choice for your situation.

How Bar-Retained Overdentures Work

Dental implants are an inspiring technological advancement, and numerous dental procedures are taking advantage of this advancement. With bar retained overdentures, PerioImplant Associates will attach a mounting bar on top of two or four dental implants. This bar locks directly onto the implants and therefore creates a secure mounting point for the actual dentures. The bar is not placed until the implants have fused to the jawbone over several months, but once the bar has been placed, you can begin to use the new overdenture immediately. The bar serves as a stable locking mechanism and the custom designed dentures snap into place right over the bar.
